Success!? I finally got ink for my printer and finished my Board Book.

Creating mini books give me a sense of accomplishment.? I enjoy seeing a finished product that is readily available to share with friends and family.? They make wonderful gifts as well. They?re a project that doesn?t take a long time to complete.? I don?t become bored quickly with the task at hand.

The project I made ? Water Babies ? was created with an old ?Create & Treasure? board book that I had in my stash.

But you could easily create one with chip board or some other foundation material.? Mini Books are only limited by your imagination.

So, I came up with an idea to help you complete a Mini Fun Book of your own.? I created the papers, elements, page templates AND an instructional PDF with information and inspirational page layouts to help you make your own.

Here?s a preview of everything you can get to have a Scrapping Good Time this weekend!

Exxon yet to inspect Afghanistan's biggest oil project: minister

KABUL (Reuters) - Exxon Mobil Corp, the world's biggest non-state oil company, has not yet accepted an offer to look over a new Afghan oil concession in the country's north, possibly indicating a fading appetite to invest in the conflict-wracked country.

As Afghanistan's government finalizes new laws designed to attract more foreign mining investment, Mining Minister Wahidullah Shahrani told Reuters that Exxon had not turned up for a site tour which closes on Sunday, despite being shortlisted with eight other firms for the Afghan Tajik tender near Mazar-e-Sharif.

"Hopefully at some point they (Exxon) will visit the area. But that visit is not mandatory," Shahrani said in an interview late on Saturday in his Kabul office. A spokeswoman for U.S.-based Exxon said she could not immediately comment.

Exxon's July expression of interest in the Afghan Tajik basin, which holds an estimated 1.9 billion barrels of oil, lent credence to hopes that Kabul may be making progress in efforts to lessen its reliance on aid, through untapped resources worth as much as $1 trillion, despite an ongoing insurgency.

Shahrani said that with an October bid closure deadline looming, shortlisted companies had been invited to inspect the area and meet local community leaders, an offer which closes on September 30, and which would usually be accepted.

"Some companies, they have already visited, some companies are about to visit the area," he said. "Those companies, most of them are well established in the region."

Chinese and Indian companies are already scrambling to lock in access to Afghanistan's mineral wealth, most estimates of which date back to U.S. surveys carried out decades ago. The country has large deposits of gold, copper, iron ore and oil, as well as lithium and rare earths used in high-tech manufacturing.

Chinese firms are leading the race, with China Metallurgical Group (MCC) and Jiangxi Copper winning a 2007 deal to exploit the giant $3 billion Aynak copper mine southeast of the capital Kabul.

MAJOR INTEREST

Exxon's interest fuelled hopes that U.S.-based majors may also compete, despite worries over security and endemic graft, adding urgency to a push for new laws designed to make resource investment more attractive as foreign combat troops withdraw.

Shahrani's ministry will soon resubmit to President Hamid Karzai's cabinet mining laws that Afghan officials and Western donors hope will persuade foreign firms to invest in the country's resources, but which were rejected in July over concerns they were too generous to miners.

The re-draft, backed by Western donors and the World Bank, would remove a 2009 clause separating exploration from an automatic license to exploit finds, a law which led miners to question why they were spending their money on expensive and risky exploration if they could not be assured of profiting.

"It created a lot of discomfort among the potential mining companies and global investors," Shahrani said.

"We have made the provision that whoever gets the license for exploration through the tender, once they conduct the exploration, if they find a deposit to be commercially and economically viable, their exploration license will be automatically converted to an exploitation or production license."

Miners and Western diplomats have not managed to convince the government to include fixed royalty payments in the re-drafted law, though Shahrani admitted that some resources firms thought it lead to greater confidence in planning.

"In the new draft law, we have not mentioned that, and we will leave that to be determined in the bidding process," he said.

Instead, the overhaul would commit the government to more transparency by publishing contract details in local and international newspapers, as well as on its own website, to counter perceptions of graft in Afghanistan's notorious kleptocracy.

The draft laws, he said, should go to Karzai's cabinet in three to four weeks before a November vote in the fractious parliament, where lawmakers have in recent months been testing their muscle with Karzai, sacking key security ministers.

Some political analysts have also speculated that Shahrani's problems with the law's initial draft may have been linked to political rivalries over control of potential resource profits.

YEARS UNTIL PRODUCTION

Shahrani said he was optimistic opposition to the laws had faded in cabinet, and that parliament's influential economics and resource committees were also positive about the legislation, which was drafted with World Bank help.

"We have been interacting very closely with parliament's relative committees. I can see a significant degree of support on behalf of the members of those committees," he said.

Despite the risk of global commodity prices falling as a result of concerns about the strength of the Chinese economy and a global economic slowdown, Shahrani said he believed Afghanistan had not missed the peak of the resource boom.

Most projects in Afghanistan, he said, including bids for northeastern gold concessions in Badakhshan now being considered, would take years to reach production.

"If we do award the concessions tomorrow for iron ore and copper, usually it takes at least five to six years for these deposits to get developed," he said. "We hope that by then the demand for commodities will again increase."

Divided town a challenge to Myanmar democracy bid

SITTWE, Myanmar (AP) ? There are no Muslim faithful in most of this crumbling town's main mosques anymore, no Muslim students at its university.

They're gone from the market, missing from the port, too terrified to walk on just about any street downtown.

Three-and-a-half months after some of the bloodiest clashes in a generation between Myanmar's ethnic Rakhine Buddhists and stateless Muslims known as Rohingya left the western town of Sittwe in flames, nobody is quite sure when ? or even if ? the Rohingya will be allowed to resume the lives they once lived here.

The conflict has fundamentally altered the demographic landscape of this coastal state capital, giving way to a disturbing policy of government-backed segregation that contrasts starkly with the democratic reforms Myanmar's leadership has promised the world since half a century of military rule ended last year.

While the Rakhine can move freely, some 75,000 Rohingya have effectively been confined to a series of rural displaced camps outside Sittwe and a single downtown district they dare not leave for fear of being attacked.

For the town's Muslim population, it's a life of exclusion that's separate, and anything but equal.

"We're living like prisoners here," said Thant Sin, a Rohingya shopkeeper who has been holed up since June in the last Rohingya-dominated quarter of central Sittwe that wasn't burned down.

Too afraid to leave, the 47-year-old cannot work anyway. The blue wooden doors of his shuttered pharmaceutical stall sit abandoned inside the city's main market ? a place only Rakhine are now allowed to enter.

The crisis in western Myanmar goes back decades and is rooted in a highly controversial dispute over where the region's Muslim inhabitants are really from. Although many Rohingya have lived in Myanmar for generations, they are widely denigrated here as foreigners ? intruders who came from neighboring Bangladesh to steal scarce land.

The U.N. estimates their number at 800,000. But the government does not count them as one of the country's 135 ethnic groups, and so ? like Bangladesh ? denies them citizenship. Human rights groups say racism also plays a role: Many Rohingya, who speak a distinct Bengali dialect and resemble Muslim Bangladeshis, have darker skin and are heavily discriminated against.

In late May, tensions boiled over after the rape and murder of a Rakhine woman, allegedly by three Rohingya, in a town south of Sittwe. By mid-June, skirmishes between rival mobs carrying swords, spears and iron rods erupted across the region. Conservative estimates put the death toll at around 100 statewide, with 5,000 homes burned along with dozens of mosques and monasteries.

Sittwe suffered more damage than most, and today blackened tracts of rubble-strewn land filled with knotted tree stumps are scattered everywhere. The largest, called Narzi, was home to 10,000 Muslims.

Human Rights Watch accused security forces of colluding with Rakhine mobs at the height of the mayhem, opening fire on Rohingya even as they struggled to douse the flames of their burning homes.

Speaking to a delegation of visiting American diplomats earlier this month, Border Affairs Minister Lt. Gen. Thein Htay described Sittwe's new status quo. Drawing his finger across a city map, he said there are now "lines that cannot be crossed" by either side, or else "there will be aggression ... there will be disputes."

"It's not what we want," he added with a polite smile. "But this is the reality we face."

While police and soldiers are protecting mosques and guarding Rohingya in camps, there is much they cannot control. One group of 300 local Buddhist leaders, for example, issued pamphlets urging the Rakhine not to do business with the Rohingya or even talk to them. It is the only way, they say, to avert violence.

Inside Sittwe's once mixed municipal hospital, a separate ward has been established to serve Muslim patients only; on a recent day, it was filled with just four patients whose families said they could only get there with police escorts.

At the town's university, only Rakhine now attend. And at the main market, plastic identity cards are needed to enter: pink for shopkeepers, yellow for customers, none for Rohingya.

The crisis has posed one of the most serious challenges yet to Thein Sein's nascent government, which declared a state of emergency and warned the unrest could threaten the country's nascent transition toward democracy if it spread.

Although the clashes have been contained and an independent commission has been appointed to study the conflict and recommend solutions, the government has shown little political will to go further.

The Rohingya are a deeply unpopular cause in Myanmar, where even opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi and former political prisoners imprisoned by the army have failed to speak out on their behalf. In July, Thein Sein himself suggested the Rohingya should be sent to any other country willing to take them.

"In that context, we're seeing them segregated into squalid camps, fleeing the country, and in some cases being rounded up and imprisoned," said Matthew Smith, a researcher for Human Rights Watch who authored a recent report for the New York-based group on the latest unrest.

In places like Sittwe, "there is a risk of permanent segregation," Smith said. "None of this bodes well for the prospects of a multi-ethnic democracy."

In the meantime, the government's own statistics indicate the crisis is worsening ? at least for the Rohingya.

While the total number of displaced Rakhine statewide has declined from about 24,000 at the start of the crisis to 5,600 today, the number of displaced Rohingya has risen from 52,000 to 70,000, mostly in camps just outside Sittwe.

The government has blamed the rise on Rohingya it says didn't lose homes but who are eager to gain access to aid handouts. Insecurity is also likely a factor, though. Amnesty International has accused authorities of detaining hundreds of Rohingya in a post-conflict crackdown aimed almost exclusively at Muslims. And in August, 3,500 people were displaced after new clashes saw nearly 600 homes burned in the town of Kyauktaw, according to the U.N.

Elsewhere in Rakhine state, the army has resumed forced labor against Muslims, ordering villagers to cultivate the military's paddy fields, act as porters and rebuild destroyed homes, according to a report by the Arakan Project, an activist group.

In Sittwe, mutual fear and distrust runs so high that 7,000 Rohingya crammed inside a dilapidated quarter called Aung Mingalar have not set foot outside it since June. It's the last Muslim-inhabited block downtown, a tiny place that takes about five minutes to cross by foot.

Thant Sin, the Rohingya shopkeeper who lives in Aung Mingalar, said that the government delivers supplies of rice, but that getting almost everything else requires exorbitant bribes and connections. There is just one mosque. There are no clinics, medical care or schools, and Thant Sin is worried his savings will run out in weeks.

The married father of five has been unable to open his market stall since authorities ordered it shut three months ago. One told him, "This for the Rakhine now," he recalled.

"All we want to do is go back to work," he said. "The government is doing nothing to help us get our lives back."

All four roads into Aung Mingalar are guarded by police, and outside, past the roadblocks of barbed wire and wood that divide the district from the rest of town, Rakhine walk freely ? sometimes yelling racial slurs or hurling stones from slingshots.

Across the street, a 57-year-old Rakhine, Aye Myint, leaned back in a rusted metal chair and peered at a group of bearded Muslim men in Aung Mingalar.

"I feel nothing for those people now," he said. "After what happened ... they cannot be trusted anymore. To tell the truth, we want them out of here."

Hla Thain, the attorney general of Rakhine state, denied there was any official policy of forced segregation, saying security forces are deployed to protect both sides, not keep them apart. But he acknowledged that there were not enough police or soldiers to make the two communities feel safe, and that huge obstacles to reconciliation remain.

"We want them to live together, that is our goal, but we can't force people to change," he said. "Anger is still running high. Neither side can forget that they lost family members, their homes."

For now, he said, the government is studying every possibility to make life "normal" again. For example: having Rakhine students attend university in the morning, while Rohingya go each afternoon.

Thein Htay, the border minister, was more blunt.

"We may have to build another market center, another trading center, another port" for the Rohingya, he said, because it will be "very difficult otherwise."

Navigating the seas of Titan, Saturn's largest moon

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Humanity has landed a rover on Mars. Now, say scientists, it's time to land a boat on Titan. This outlandish scenario could become reality, according to scientists presenting their proposals at the European Planetary Science Congress on Sept. 27.

Titan, Saturn's largest moon, is one of the most Earth-like bodies in the Solar System. With a thick atmosphere, a diameter between that of Earth and the planet Mercury, and a network of seas, lakes and rivers, it is in many respects more like a planet than a moon like Earth's.

The Cassini-Huygens mission, which studied Titan extensively in the 2000s, confirmed that lakes, seas and rivers of liquid hydrocarbons (similar to household gas) exist, covering much of the satellite's northern hemisphere. Although it eventually landed on solid ground, the Hugyens lander was designed to be able to float for a short period.

The new plans, called the Titan Lake In-situ Sampling Propelled Explorer, proposes a boat-probe, propelled by wheels, paddles or screws. The probe would land in the middle of Ligeia Mare (the biggest lake, near Titan's north pole), then set sail for the coast, taking scientific measurements along the way. The mission would last around six months to a year.

"The main innovation in TALISE is the propulsion system," says Igone Urdampilleta (SENER), a member of the TALISE team. "This allows the probe to move, under control, from the landing site in the lake, to the closest shore. The displacement capability would achieve the obtaining of liquid and solid samples from several scientific interesting locations on Titan's surface such as the landing place, along the route towards the shore and finally at the shoreline."

Titan's environment is too cold for life as we know it, but its environment, rich in the building blocks of life, is of great interest to astrobiologists. The satellite's atmosphere is made up largely of nitrogen (like Earth's), is rich in organic compounds and hydrogen cyanide, which may have played a role in the emergence of life on Earth.

The TALISE concept is being developed as a partnership between SENER and the Centro de Astrobiolog?a in Madrid, Spain. This mission concept is the result of a 'phase 0' study. In the following phases the feasibility study and a preliminary mission architecture would be realised to consolidate a possible technical proposal for future space science mission call.

Looking After Your Prostate: Start Now and Feel the Benefits Later ...

For many men, the idea of prostate health lurks in the back of their conscious- it?s important, it?s something that will become increasingly important the older one gets, but it?s not something to think about now???is it? Well, actually studies are showing that taking steps to look after your prostate throughout your life can drastically reduce the risk of prostate problems, including cancer, at a later age.

What is the Prostate?

The prostate is a male gland, found just below the bladder. It plays an incredibly important role in the production of semen, producing a fluid that protects the sperm as it passes out of the body. The fluid that the prostate produces makes up to 30% of the total semen production.

However, many men experience problems with their prostate at around the age of 50 or over; this is often because the prostate starts to enlarge in later life, a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia, that two thirds of men will suffer from. As the gland grows larger, it starts to press on the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder. This can produce the sensation of needing to urinate, or often make urinating harder or painful.

At about the same age, the chance of prostate cancer increases sharply. In fact, prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer that men can suffer from. Since the early signs of the cancer are often symptom-less, it is easy for it to go undetected. By protecting the health of your prostate, you can really make huge steps towards lessening these serious problems, or even avoiding them altogether! The earlier in life you start, the more effectively you can protect yourself against future ailments.

How Can I Protect My Prostate?

  1. Exercise regularly!
Studies show that men who are overweight are more commonly diagnosed with prostate cancer. By doing regular exercise, you can keep your weight under control, which will lessen your risk factor, and increase your over-all health and wellbeing.
  1. Don?t Smoke!
Evidence shows that men who have smoked regularly throughout their life are almost twice as likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer!
  1. Eat Plenty of Fruit and Vegetables!
Particularly those which are dark leafy vegetables. These are known as cruciferous vegetables, and include broccoli and brussel sprouts; They are high in vitamin C, soluble fibre and selenium, which has links to lowering the risk of developing cancer.
  1. Get some Lycopene in your life!
Lycopene is an antioxidant, found in colored vegetables like tomatoes- it is lycopene that gives tomatoes its red colouring. There has been interesting research conducted that shows the effect lycopene has on improving the health of the prostate. The prostate produces a protein called Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA), the levels of which can be tested by checking the blood; in men with prostate problems including cancer, the levels of PSA in the blood are often elevated. However, trials have seemed to show that lycopene can lower the levels of PSA, suggesting that it improves the health of the prostate. Whilst lycopene is found naturally in many vegetables, it can also be taken in supplement form, for higher dosages and convenience. (http://www.prostacet.com/)
  1. Include more Vitamin D in your Diet!
Research shows that vitamin D can decrease the chance of developing prostate cancer.
  1. Drink Less Alcohol!
Alcohol is known to raise the risk of many kinds of cancer, as well as causing heart disease and liver damage. If you are careful with what you drink, you can protect your over-all health, as well as your prostate.
  1. Get Checked Regularly!
Since early-stage prostate cancer in symptomless, it is very wise to get checked to make sure that any disease does not go undetected for too long. From the age of 50, yearly check-ups with your GP are advisable, who will be able to detect any irregularities, and keep a check on your prostate health in general. Of course, if prostate cancer runs in your family, it is recommended to start having checks at an earlier age- be sure to talk to your doctor for advice on testing.

Taliban release video on Afghan base attackers

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? The Taliban published a video Monday they say shows insurgents preparing for the brazen attack on a major NATO base earlier this month, just as NATO forces released data showing that insurgent attacks decreased in August.

The twin releases are a reminder of the escalating battle for public opinion between the insurgency and the international military as U.S. and allied troops draw down. The Taliban continue to contend that they are fighting at full force while the international alliance says that they have been weakened.

In the Sept. 14 attack on Camp Bastion in Helmand province, 15 insurgents dressed in U.S. Army uniforms breached the base's perimeter fence then used automatic rifles and rocket-propelled grenade launchers to fire on planes and people around the base's airstrip. They managed to kill two Marines and destroy six fighter jets costing tens of millions each before they were stopped. All but one of the assailants were killed in the fighting.

The Taliban video shows men wearing U.S. Army uniforms as they practice cutting through a chain-link fence and charging through the opening. One man indicates targets with a pointer and a whiteboard showing drawings of planes and fortifications. He speaks Pashtun, a major language in southern Afghanistan and parts of Pakistan. Words on the whiteboard are written in Urdu, a language more common in Pakistan.

A Taliban spokesman emailed the link to the video to the media but it was not possible to verify the authenticity of the footage. Nothing in the video indicates when or where it was filmed.

The NATO statistics showed that insurgent attacks decreased 9 percent in August, compared with the same month last year ? continuing a falloff that started in July after a spike in attacks in May and June.

NATO said the shortened poppy harvest in the spring meant that the usual summer fighting season started earlier. Regionally, attacks decreased in the east and south, but increased in the west and north, according to the data.

Overall, NATO's figures show insurgent attacks are down 5 percent for the year so far, compared with the same period of 2011.

Australian Army Brig. Gen. Roger Noble, deputy to the deputy chief of staff for operations of the U.S.-led military coalition in Afghanistan, told reporters in Kabul earlier this month that fighting in the south ? the Taliban strongholds of Kandahar and Helmand provinces ? has moved away from the bigger towns and cities.

"If you think back to 2010, people were talking about central Helmand being the center of fighting, but it's been pushed out and away from most of the major population centers," he said. "But there is still plenty of fighting and it is dangerous and having a direct effect in casualties on the coalition and also, increasingly, on the Afghan security forces."

Nearly two years after President Barack Obama announced that he was sending another 33,000 troops to take on the Taliban, those reinforcements have just completed their return to the United States. That leaves about 68,000 American troops, along with their NATO allies and Afghan partners, to carry out an ambitious plan to put the Afghans fully in the combat lead as early as next year.

Conservatives urge House Speaker to nix wind tax credit

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Forty-seven Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives are pushing Speaker John Boehner to eliminate the wind production tax credit, a tax break that has split Republicans and drawn criticism from presidential hopeful Mitt Romney.

Democratic President Barack Obama has urged Congress to extend the credit, which dates to 1992 and has support from Republicans in states that are home to wind farms and manufacturing plants, such as Iowa and South Dakota.

The credit has other powerful proponents in big companies that buy wind energy. Heavyweights including Microsoft Corp, Sprint and Hewlett-Packard have urged renewal. The industry calls it vital to ensuring jobs, including wind turbine tower manufacturing in a broad swath of U.S. states.

Republican opposition to renewable energy tax breaks has been galvanized by anger over a failed solar project backed by the Obama administration. Republicans referred to that project, a start-up company called Solyndra, several times in the letter.

"The Obama administration has poured billions into subsidizing its favored green energy sources," reads the letter dated September 21 from House Republicans to Boehner, also a Republican. "Twenty years of subsidizing wind is more than enough."

Signers of the letter include Republicans on the Energy and Commerce Committee, but does not include members of the powerful tax-writing Ways and Means Committee, which is led by Representative Dave Camp.

A spokesman for Boehner said the issue will be addressed after the election.

Mitt Romney, Obama's Republican rival for the presidency in elections on November 6, irked some members of his party when he backed ending the subsidy earlier this year.

Prominent Senate Republicans including Charles Grassley of Iowa are big wind credit supporters and extension is included in Senate legislation still pending.

The House and Senate are expected to make a decision on the wind credit, along with a slew of breaks known as "tax extenders" and the larger issue of individual tax rates, after the elections and before the extenders expire at year's end.

The wind industry says 37,000 jobs would be lost if the tax credit expires and some big companies have already attributed layoffs to the uncertainty, including Siemens. The credit costs about $11 billion a year. (Reporting by Kim Dixon; Editing by Howard Goller and Todd Eastham)

As soon as the iPhone 5 was announced with its tall screen, we all know what jokes were coming. But that doesn't mean they aren't funny ? and when you throw a certain Mars rover celebrity into the mix, it's a guaranteed hit.

This new parody video, by YouTube comedy channel Satire, imagines an iPhone taken to the limits of tallness ? with a few clever applications that seem like they might actually work. The panorama function certainly is a natural fit.

But in order add a little star power to their video (so to speak), they recruited?Bobak Ferdowsi, the mohawked JPL engineer who enjoyed internet stardom after the Curiosity Mars Rover's safe landing. He's pictured strumming his iPhone 5 like a guitar by a sign reading "Will work for peanuts" ? a reference to the lucky peanuts enjoyed by NASA engineers at critical mission moments.

It gives?the already-enjoyable video a little bit of an internet-insider feeling. Watch the parody above if you haven't already.

Animal control officers in Va. find exotic pets | MyFOX8.com ...

leash

PORTSMOUTH, Va. ? Animal control officers responding to a call for a stray dog in Portsmouth instead stumbled upon a menagerie that included two 50-pound turtles, live and dead snakes and other exotic animals.

According to media reports, Portsmouth police said the discovery Thursday included the large turtles in tubs, nearly two dozen smaller turtles, a 4-foot venomous snake, an eel and a parrot. Several of the turtles were dead and one was found in a dresser drawer.

The animal control officers were assisted by police and a local reptile rescue group. The large turtles were being evaluated.

The animals appeared to have been abandoned.

Virginia is amid a review of regulations governing exotic and potentially dangerous animals to see if laws should be tightened.

"Courtney decided she wanted to change her makeup. She went for a lighter, more natural look, old Hollywood kind of look." Totally. So very natural.

"People always think a knife is touching her face, but she's like a chameleon ... she can change her look so easily," Keller added. "People just don't get it."

True, we are so unenlightened, speculating about such things.

What do you think? Follow the link above for "younger" pictures of her for comparison, then tell us below: Did Courtney Stodden have plastic surgery?

HBT: Reds worried about Chapman's velocity

Aroldis Chapman was a mess last night, walking three of the five batters he faced after coming into a tie game in extra innings and being removed mid-inning for the first time all season.

Within that ugly performance he threw 22 pitches and none of them topped 97 miles per hour while many of Chapman?s fastballs were in the low-90s. For a guy who averages 98 miles per hour with his fastball, frequently hits triple-digits, and regularly throws his slider in the low-90s that qualifies as a red flag.

Here?s what manager Dusty Baker said afterward, via Mark Sheldon of MLB.com:

Yeah, because his velocity was down. He didn?t have any pain. He might be a little tired. We might have to rest him for a while here. He was analyzed by a doctor. The doctor said his shoulder is fatigued. We?ve got to take care of him.

Cincinnati?s big 9.5-game lead in the NL Central provides more than enough cushion to be extremely cautious with Chapman, so hopefully they take advantage. Chapman also blew a save and took a loss Sunday, serving up a three-run homer among four total hits, so it seems pretty safe to say that something isn?t right.

Oil prices rise ahead of key European bank meeting

The oil market found little to motivate it Wednesday. That should change in the next two days.

Benchmark oil rose 6 cents to end at $95.36 per barrel in New York. Weak manufacturing reports earlier in the week from China and the U.S., as well as Europe's dire economic picture, weighed on trader sentiment. But that was countered by hope for measures from central banks and governments to promote global economic growth. Such steps could translate into more demand for energy products.

Two upcoming developments provide a better sense of what's ahead for the global economy. And what direction oil prices will head.

The European Central Bank is expected to announce a bond-buying program Thursday to reduce high borrowing costs in Spain and Italy. The program is designed to help stabilize the region's financial crisis and promote growth.

If the ECB falls short of expectations, that would heighten concerns about a regional recession and lower oil prices, said oil analyst Gene McGillian of Tradition Energy.

He speculated that the price could drop into the mid-$80 per barrel range. Oil's low for the year was $77.69 per barrel in late June.

On Friday, the U.S. government comes out with its latest jobs report. Oil could rise with another positive report. On Aug. 3 the government reported the best monthly job growth since early in the year, and the price of oil rose 5 percent.

Meanwhile, average gas prices were unchanged overnight at $3.824 per gallon, according to AAA, Wright Express and the Oil Price Information Service.

Brent crude, which is used to price international varieties of oil, fell $1.09 to $113.09 per barrel in London.

In other futures trading in New York:

? Heating oil fell 2.92 cents to end at $3.1176 per gallon.

? Wholesale gasoline fell 0.24 cent to end at $2.9498 per gallon.

? Natural gas fell 5.9 cents to end at $2.795 per 1,000 cubic feet.

10 Most Memorable AI Characters In Video Games ? GamingBolt ...

Page 1 Page 2 Page 3

When people think of AI in games, they usually fixate upon the complexity of how NPCs interact with the player. Though this is how AI most often occurs in games, the AI construct character that is such a staple of the science fiction genre crops up a fair few times in our favourite game franchises. Far from the usual stereotype of the vengeful supercomputer, (though there are plenty of those to be had) many of the AI characters in games offer a deeper complexity that makes them truly memorable; or they?re just that evil and hateful towards humans that we can?t help but remember them. Sometimes it?s a bit of both. Either way, we?ve got ten of the most inspired AI characters here for you. This list may contain spoilers.

EDI ? Mass Effect series

Don?t let her appearance fool you, she?s a real flirt.

Oh EDI, you?ve taken us on quite the emotional roller-coaster since your debut in Mass Effect 2. Initially starting as a disembodied AI that is sent to monitor Sherpard on Cerberus? recreation of the Normandy, she winds up getting her own body, a semblance of free will and becomes romantically entangled with Joker of all people. EDI, you sly dog.

Shodan ? System Shock series

Just look at her. Those are the cold, dark eyes of a killer!

The first experience many of us had with malicious AIs trying to kill us in a virtual environment, and boy is it memorable because of it. Both System Shock games are masterful works of survival horror, and the majority of this frightening tension was created by Shodan. Having her taunt you throughout the game was a constant source of anxiety, and it paved the way for other consistent AI characters like Glados. A seminal classic of character design prowess.

Glados ? Portal series

Speak of the devil. Right after Shodan, we have the more comical equivalent. That?s not to say Glados is derivative of Syestem Shock?s monstrous AI, but her omniscient presence throughout the Portal games is vaguely similar. It is Glados? humour that really sets her apart though, with her auto-tuned voice and dry wit lifting Portal 1 and 2 up to now legendary heights.

Reconstructive Ear Plastic Surgery for Kids

Reconstructive ear plastic surgery may be an option for children involved in accidents or those suffering from a birth deformity. Many children are born with small or even missing ears. In other cases, accidents can leave a child with a deformity. These conditions are not harmful to the child?s health, but they can be damaging to a person?s self-esteem. For this reason, parents may want to seek out a specialist who can determine if there are any options for reconstruction to make the appearance a bit more normal.

Improving Hearing

One reason to consider reconstructive ear plastic surgery is to improve hearing. In some children, the inner ears develop normally. However, the exterior does not. It may fold over or may even lack an external opening. When this happens, the excess skin may obstruct hearing. By having a surgical procedure to open up this passageway, it may be possible to improve hearing loss. Additionally, those who have folded ears lose the ability of the outer portion of the ears to pull sounds into their ears. They may suffer from a reduction in the ability to hear for this reason. A surgeon may be able to construct the ear in a more normal fashion to enable sound passage.

Cosmetic Benefits

Another reason to have this procedure is to improve aesthetics. Doctors may be able to change the size, shape, or location of various components of the cartilage. In addition, they can pin back those that are too large or stick out. This does not improve any hearing function in most cases, but it can make a significant improvement in the child?s appearance. Later in life, they may appreciate this.

When to Get Help

For those with children with any type of deformity like this, it is important to monitor the child?s ability to hear throughout their young life. By the time that the child is five or six, or just before entering school, the surgeons will consider doing procedures to construct the area. At this age, there is enough cartilage present in many children to make changes that will last their lifetime. However, most procedures require several stages and can take several months to completely heal.

Overall, children will benefit from reconstructive ear plastic surgery if their condition is moderate to severe. To find out what options may be available, parents can bring their children to see a specialist. Look for a surgeon specializing in ear reconstructive procedures. In doing so, it may be possible to see significant improvements that you did not think were possible.

GourmetGorro: The Dogs, Edinburgh restaurant review

We?ve just got back from summer hols in Edinburgh. A busy few days were spent seeing concerts, eating, watching comedy, eating, checking out the pandas at the zoo, eating and celeb spotting. In the space of 5 days, I spotted more c?lebs than I have in the last 10 years. Sir Chris Hoy, Tom Kitchin, Konnie Huq, Sue Perkins andTed from Scrubs were all sighted doing various mundane activities. However, one spot ranks above all others ? eating in the same restaurant as Jay Rayner.

On Sunday evening as we were paying our bill at The Dogs, in walked Jay Rayner. ?I of course made no attempt to say hello to my food hero but instead clammed up, started sweating, made a quick exit and then tweeted him. That?s how I roll?.

This sighting has a double layer of excitement. Will I be able to say that I was there when Jay Rayner reviewed a restaurant? If so, will he also think the honeycomb parfait was too light on flavour and sum up his meal by describing it as the dog?s proverbials? ?I for one will be refreshing the Guardian website at midnight on Saturday to find out.?

Just in case he does, here are my views to use a comparison.

The Dogs looks familiar. The paper menus, simple sounding dishes utilising cheap cuts of meat, mismatched crockery and higgledy-piggledy furniture are all widely seen in gastro-pubs up and down the land. Except, it isn?t a pub, it?s a restaurant. So I guess that makes The Dogs a gastro-restaurant.

To start, I ordered the fried lamb breast (?4.95) ? A crisp, moist, fatty piece of meat sat on top of a butternut squash puree infused with rosemary. The meat was concealed by a hillock of lightly dressed rocket scattered with almonds. Every flavour and texture complimented the next perfectly. ?

Mrs G?s classic starter of stilton, walnut and apple salad (?4.95) was executed accurately and generously.

Somehow Mrs G persuaded me to not have the pork belly (?11.95) on the premise that I always order it and that it was her turn. Thankfully, I managed to eat half of hers due to the epic portion size. A hulking tranche of excellent meat was accompanied by roast vegetables and some ?highly serviceable buttered new potatoes and mangetout. The advertised bacon and mushroom stuffing appeared absent but was compensated for by a thick meaty peppery sauce.

My fish stew (?11.50) was Mary Poppins? handbag-esque in proportions. Spoonful after spoonful brought up tender squid, flakes of white fish, plump mussels and juicy prawns. The presence of a few vegetables and herbs, an accompanying baton of garlic fried bread and the lubrication of a creamy vegetable broth balanced the dish well.

A side of dripping cooked chips (?2.95) were crisp, fluffy and meaty. Sadly, the presence of their skins made them closer to their poorer sibling, the wedge.

My dessert was the only real hiccup of the meal. A rather too subtle honeycomb parfait (?4.50), drenched in a generic tasting chocolate sauce was saved by the presence of some superb crisp treacly honeycomb. ?

Mrs G?s lemon posset (?3.80) in contrast was as good as it gets. Light, sharp and creamy, it was elevated by the crispness of candied lemon peel and a stonking honey and oat biscuit.

What else is there to say about The Dogs except that the service was rapid and friendly, and that it's really excellent value? Oh yeah, it goes without saying that our meal was the dog?s proverbials.?

Update - Jay Rayner just dashed my hopes by informing me that he reviewed The Dogs back in 2008.Still, he did sort of mention the dog's proverbials which kind of makes up for it.?

Crosstex Energy Provides Update on Impact of Louisiana Slurry on Partnership?s Facilities and Operations

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Crosstex Energy companies, Crosstex Energy, L.P. (NASDAQ: XTEX) (the Partnership) and Crosstex Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ: XTXI) (the Corporation), are providing this update on the impact and expected impacts of the slurry near Bayou Corne, Assumption Parish, Louisiana, on the Partnership?s facilities and operations.

?Crosstex Butane Cavern Shows Little-to-no Threat to Slurry Hole Area?

In early August, a slurry-filled sinkhole developed in Assumption Parish near Bayou Corne, Louisiana. The cause of the slurry is currently under investigation by Louisiana state and local officials. Consequently, the Partnership took a section of its 36-inch-diameter natural gas pipeline located near the sinkhole out of service. Service to certain markets, primarily in the Mississippi River area, has been curtailed or interrupted, and the Partnership has worked with its customers to secure alternative natural gas supplies so that disruptions are minimized. The Partnership expects that the ongoing overall business impact on the services provided by the pipeline, which include gathering, processing, transportation and end-user sales, will be approximately $250,000- $300,000 per month while the pipeline section is out of service.

The Partnership will relocate the portion of the pipeline affected and certain services will not resume until the relocation has been completed. The Partnership is evaluating potential rerouting alternatives, timing and expected costs. Based on the current alternatives being considered, the Partnership estimates the cost of the relocation to be $20-25 million and expects to complete the relocation by summer 2013. The Partnership is assessing the potential for recovering its losses from responsible parties and insurance coverage. The Partnership plans to write-off its investment in the section of the impacted existing pipeline and capitalize the costs of the replacement pipeline. The write-off is a non-cash impairment charge and estimated to be less than $0.5 million.

The Partnership also owns and operates the Napoleonville storage facility, which is located off Highway 70 in the Bayou Corne area. The facility consists of two salt dome natural gas liquids storage caverns. The Partnership is currently storing approximately 900,000 barrels of normal butane in the facilities for third parties. The Partnership?s management does not believe that the storage facilities have been affected by the slurry. The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality recently supported this assessment in a press release issued August 16, 2012, entitled ?Crosstex Butane Cavern Shows Little-to-no Threat to Slurry Hole Area,? which can be found at http://www.deq.louisiana.gov/portal/portals/0/news/pdf/crosstex.pdf. Crosstex is continuously monitoring its Napoleonville operations and taking additional precautionary measures as determined necessary.

?Our highest priority is to ensure the safety of the surrounding community, our employees, contractors and the environment,? said Barry E. Davis, Crosstex President and Chief Executive Officer. ?We took immediate actions to ensure the safety of all involved and the integrity of our facilities and operations near the sinkhole, and continue to work closely with state agencies and local officials.?

About the Crosstex Energy Companies

Crosstex Energy, L.P., a midstream natural gas company headquartered in Dallas, operates approximately 3,500 miles of natural gas, natural gas liquids, and oil pipelines, 10 processing plants and four fractionators. The Partnership also operates barge terminals, rail terminals, product storage facilities, brine water disposal wells and an extensive truck fleet.

Crosstex Energy, Inc. owns the two percent general partner interest, a 22 percent limited partner interest and the incentive distribution rights of Crosstex Energy, L.P.

Additional information about the Crosstex companies can be found at www.crosstexenergy.com.
