PORTSMOUTH, Va. ? Animal control officers responding to a call for a stray dog in Portsmouth instead stumbled upon a menagerie that included two 50-pound turtles, live and dead snakes and other exotic animals.
According to media reports, Portsmouth police said the discovery Thursday included the large turtles in tubs, nearly two dozen smaller turtles, a 4-foot venomous snake, an eel and a parrot. Several of the turtles were dead and one was found in a dresser drawer.
The animal control officers were assisted by police and a local reptile rescue group. The large turtles were being evaluated.
The animals appeared to have been abandoned.
Virginia is amid a review of regulations governing exotic and potentially dangerous animals to see if laws should be tightened.
