New studies reveal connections between animals' microbial communities and behavior

New studies reveal connections between animals' microbial communities and behavior

Saturday, October 13, 2012

New research is revealing surprising connections between animal microbiomes?the communities of microbes that live inside animals' bodies?and animal behavior, according to a paper by University of Georgia ecologist Vanessa O. Ezenwa and her colleagues. The article, just published in the Perspectives section of the journal Science, reviews recent developments in this emerging research area and offers questions for future investigation.

The paper grew out of a National Science Foundation-sponsored workshop on new ways to approach the study of animal behavior. Ezenwa, an associate professor in the UGA Odum School of Ecology and College of Veterinary Medicine department of infectious diseases, and her coauthors were interested in the relationship between animal behavior and beneficial microbes.

Most research on the interactions between microbes and their animal hosts has focused on pathogens, Ezenwa said. Less is known about beneficial microbes or animal microbiomes, but several recent studies have begun to explore these connections.

"We know that animal behavior plays a critical role in establishing microbiomes," she said. "Once they're established, the microbiomes then influence animal behavior in lots of ways that have far-reaching consequences. That's what we were trying to highlight in this article."

Bumble bees, for example, obtain the microbes they need through social contact with nest mates, including consuming their nest mates' feces?a not uncommon method for animals to acquire microbes. Green iguanas establish their intestinal microbiomes by feeding first on soil and later on the feces of adult iguanas.

"There are a lot of behaviors that animals might have that allow them to get the different microbes they need at different points of their lives," Ezenwa said.

Microbes, in their turn, influence a wide range of animal behaviors, including feeding, mating and predator-prey interactions.

One recent study found that fruit flies prefer to mate with others that have microbiomes most similar to their own. Another found that African malaria mosquitoes were less attracted to humans who had a greater diversity of microbes on their skin, possibly because certain microbes produce chemicals that repel these mosquitoes.

Other studies have focused on understanding the mechanisms by which microbes influence behavior.

"Recent experiments have been able to assess the molecules that are involved in communication between microbes in the gut and the brain of mice, showing that microbes are associated with shifts in things like depression and anxiety in these mice," she said. "There are huge implications in the role these microbes play in regulating neural function."

Ezenwa's own work involves investigating how social behavior and interactions between organisms might increase their likelihood of acquiring parasites and pathogens. She is starting a new project examining animal behavior and microbiomes in relation to infectious disease.

"As in the example of the bumble bees, behavior might control the microbes an animal acquires, and those microbes might then influence the animal's vulnerability to pathogens," she said.

The authors conclude that it will take a combination of molecular and experimental approaches to answer questions about the complex interactions between microbiomes and animal behaviors.

"This is a new, emerging topic that's worthy of much more investigation," Ezenwa said.

How To Advertise on Facebook: Attention Grabbing PPC Ads ...

Scratching your head trying to figure out how to advertise on Facebook? A lot of people are looking for the best ways to increase their business results through online advertising. I normally suggest that people focus on free online advertising methods as much as possible. Most new businesses simply don't have a huge advertising budget. But, if you do have a budget, Facebook pay per click is one of the best ways to do paid advertising.

When you research how to advertise on Facebook using PPC, one thing really stands out. You can really zero in on your target market. This is invaluable in the advertising world. Being able to reach exactly the people you want to reach is valuable.

But what's even better is being able to dodge the tire kickers that you don't want to spend time and money advertising to.

Facebook has very clear and concise instructions on how to place PPC ads. Plus they keep changing their systems all the time. Because of this I don't want to go into the technical details on how to set up your PPC ad campaign. It's best for you to go directly to their site for the most up to date instructions.

Instead I want to focus on strategy. There are a few key points to keep in mind. This will help you get the most out of your advertising dollars.

How To Advertise on Facebook Key #1: Know Your Target Market

First, you need to know who you're trying to reach. Be specific. One of the mistakes people often make with PPC is that they try to use a very generic, catch-all approach. They get lots of clicks on their ads, but only a very small percentage of those clicks turn into business deals. That's a very, very expensive approach to advertising!

Once you've decided who you're trying to reach, determine what they need. Find their pain. Then determine how you can fix their pain. Remember the old sales adage. The customer is always tuned into WIIFM. What's In It For Me? They aren't interested in generating profits for you. They're interested in how you can fix their pain.

Determine one thing you can offer that will fix your target prospect's pain. Zero in on just one thing. Then focus your ad copy on presenting your product or service as the one and only solution they simply must have.

How To Advertise on Facebook Key #2: Catch Their Attention

The biggest challenge with learning how to advertise on Facebook is learning to catch people's attention.

Remember, Facebook is a social networking site. Your ad is going to occupy a tiny square of real estate on people's Facebook walls. It's going to be competing with other ads. Plus, it's competing with funny pictures, comments, jokes, and life updates from people's closest friends. That a lot of competition.

You need to know how to stand out from the crowd.

Use bright colored pictures. Use non-traditional ad copy with short sentences and questions that will grab people's attention. Keep things as simple but as catchy as possible.

How To Advertise on Facebook Key #3: Always Include A Call To Action

This may sound bossy, but sometimes people just need to be told what to do. It's strange!

You can hint in your ad that they probably should click on your link if they want what you have to offer. But they won't do it. Their default answer will be "no thanks, maybe later."

Instead you need to tell them to "Click Here Now" or some other call to action. Always be sure to include this. It will make all the difference in your results.

So there's a brief primer on how to advertise on Facebook using pay per click. Now, take action. Get the technical instructions from Facebook. Determine your target prospect, find their pain and figure out how to solve it. Then catch their attention and tell them what to do (like I just did with you!).

ASUS teases October 23rd Vivo Book and Vivo Tab event, likens it to world history video

Most event teasers have at least some kind of grandiosity; we're not under illusions that they have to be modest. At the same time, ASUS may have crossed a humility barrier with a teaser for an October 23rd event launching its upcoming Vivo Tabs and (possibly Transformer Book-linked) Vivo Books. In the space of 42 seconds, ASUS likens the New York City announcement for its touchscreen Windows 8 devices to the Apollo moon missions, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and having a child -- a bit much for slabs of aluminum and glass, we think. There's not much to see of the systems themselves beyond what we already know, although Notebook Italia has noticed at least one reseller listing a Vivo Book S200 laptop with an 11.6-inch touchscreen, a Core i3, 4GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive for €499 ($647). That price would go a long way towards ASUS' promise of making touch "available to everyone..." we're just not convinced it's as important as Elvis.

(AP) ? Slowly surmounting a key obstacle, the shuttle Endeavour maintained a heading Saturday through the streets of Los Angeles toward its retirement home at a museum.

Endeavour's final mission began when it departed from the Los Angeles International Airport before dawn Friday, rolling on a 160-wheeled carrier past diamond-shaped "Shuttle Xing" signs.

Friday evening it stopped as crews spent hours transferring the shuttle to a special, lighter towing dolly. Then around midnight, it traveled over a bridge across Interstate 405, an especially tricky part of the complicated journey because of the size of the space craft and width of the bridge.

The shuttle was pulled across the Manchester Boulevard bridge by a Toyota Tundra pickup, and the car company filmed the event for a commercial after paying for a permit, turning then entire scene into a movie set complete with special lighting, sound and staging.

Police stopped traffic on the freeway below for the duration of the traverse, which took about three minutes.

Crews preparing for the crossing had to take down power lines, leaving about 400 residents of surrounding Inglewood without power for what was expected to be several hours.

Once on the other side, crews began the lengthy process of returning it to the original carrier, before resuming its journey early Saturday.

Another tricky part comes later in the day when Endeavour treks through a narrow residential street with apartment buildings on both sides. With its wings expected to intrude into driveways, residents have been told to stay indoors until the shuttle passes.

On Friday, hundreds of camera-toting spectators, some with pajama-clad children in tow, gaped as the 170,000-pound Endeavour inched by with its tail towering over streetlights and its wings spanning the roadway.

Over two days, it will trundle 12 miles at a top speed of 2 mph to its final destination ? the California Science Center where it will be the centerpiece of a new exhibit. It's expected to reach the museum sometime Saturday evening.

After an initial bumpy ride and a brief delay, the shuttle pulled off a massive feat of parallel parking by backing into a shopping center parking lot for a layover as crowds cheered on.

"This is unlike anything we've ever moved before," said Jim Hennessy, a spokesman for Sarens, the contract mover.

Spectators flocked to the parking lot in the Westchester neighborhood to get a glimpse of Endeavour, which was guarded by an entourage of police, private security and construction crews.

Janet Dion, a family therapist from nearby Manhattan Beach, marveled at the shuttle, its exterior weathered by millions of miles in space and two dozen re-entries.

"You can sense the magnitude of where it's been," Dion said, fixated on the heat tiles that protected the shuttle during the return to Earth.

James Nieuwdorp, a technician for a transit agency, saw Endeavour's aerial victory lap around California last month and traveled to see it again before it becomes a museum piece.

He enjoyed how the shuttle brought strangers together. There was "lot of camaraderie ? something that's hard to be seen these days," he said.

Shuffling a five-story-tall shuttle through urban streets was an undertaking that took nearly a year to plan. Because the 78-foot wingspan hangs over sidewalks in some locations, police enforced rolling street and sidewalk closures along the route.

The limited access frustrated some businesses that counted on huge crowds lining the curbs to boost business.

Saturday is typically the busiest day for James Fugate, who co-owns Eso Won Books in South Los Angeles. But with Endeavour expected to pass through, Fugate braced for a ho-hum day in sales.

"We don't close because we're slow. That's when you pull out a book to read," he said.

The baby of the shuttle fleet, Endeavour replaced Challenger, which exploded during liftoff in 1986, killing seven astronauts. It thundered off the launch pad 25 times, orbited Earth nearly 4,700 times and racked up 123 million miles.

Transporting Endeavour required a specialized carrier typically used to haul oil rigs, bridges and heavy equipment. The wheels can spin in any direction, allowing the shuttle to zigzag past obstacles. An operator walks alongside, controlling the movements via joystick. Several spotters along the wings are on the lookout for hazards.

Before Endeavour could travel through the streets, some 400 trees were chopped down, cable and telephone lines were hoisted, and steel plates were laid down to protect the streets and underground utilities.

Endeavour will mostly travel on wide boulevards with some boasting as many lanes as a freeway. While there have been advance preparations, there was remaining work to be done during the move, including de-energizing power lines.

The route was selected after ruling out other options. Dismantling the shuttle would have ruined the delicate heat tiles. Helicoptering it to its destination was not feasible. Neither was crossing on freeways since the shuttle is too big to fit through the underpasses. The cost of transporting it cross-town was estimated at over $10 million.

As complex as the latest endeavor is, Southern California is no stranger to moving heavy things.

In 1946, Howard Hughes' "Spruce Goose" aircraft was built in sections and hauled from Culver City to Long Beach, 30 miles away. In 1984, an old United Airlines DC-8, with its wings and tail disassembled, was towed from Long Beach to the science center.

Earlier this year, a two-story-tall chunk of granite was hauled 105 miles from a rock quarry to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

LePage pledges more tax cuts as Tax Foundation says Maine's rating

AUGUSTA, Maine ? Gov. Paul LePage says the improvement in Maine?s business tax climate as measured by the Tax Foundation is only the beginning. He will propose further tax cuts, including the elimination of the corporate income tax, to spur job growth in the state.

?We are moving in the right direction and I am pleased to see it,? he said in an interview Thursday. ?In my mind, it?s so far away from where we need to be, it?s really symbolic.?

LePage said he wants to be in the ?middle of the pack? when it comes to the overall tax burden.

The Tax Foundation released its State Business Tax Climate Index this week, moving Maine from 37th in the nation to 30th. But, LePage said, overall Maine?s tax burden is ninth highest among the states and that has to be lowered for the state to compete with what he calls the ?prosperous states.?

?I think the state of Maine should have no corporate tax at all and that the United States of America should be around 20 percent,? he said. ?Then we could compete worldwide.?

LePage said it is a global marketplace and Maine needs the federal government to adopt tax policies that encourage growth and that state changes are not enough. He said the Tax Foundation ranking next year should improve again with the further Maine tax reductions that take effect Jan. 1, 2013.

?Maine had the most sizable rank improvement this year, as a repeal of the alternative minimum tax and a change in treatment of net operating losses launched the state from 37th to 30th best overall,? the report stated.

The index compares all of the states in five areas of taxation that affect business: corporate taxes; individual income taxes; sales taxes; unemployment insurance taxes; and taxes on property, including residential and commercial property.

LePage said he made it clear when he proposed the tax changes after his election that they were only a beginning. He said he is looking at several tax cut proposals as part of the two-year budget he will submit in January, but has not decided which reductions to propose.

?[Maine Revenue Services] are giving me a whole lot of different proposals, what ifs,? he said. ?We are looking to see how they all would fit into the bigger picture.?

The bigger picture is the new zero-based budgeting process that is still under way and what savings it may yield. Another issue is the structural budget gap of $756 million the state is facing and how the governor proposes to resolve that.

The governor?s promise of further tax cut proposals and elimination of the corporate income tax brought a sharp response from Rep. Seth Berry, D-Bowdoinham, the lead Democrat on the Taxation Committee.

?The direction that the governor is taking our tax code in takes money out of the pockets of the middle class and that is my great concern and that of most Democrats,? he said Thursday.

Berry said for the state to see its economy grow, the incomes of the middle class need to increase. He said the focus of any tax reductions should be on the middle class, not corporations and the wealthy.

Rep. Gary Knight, R-Livermore Falls, the co-chairman of the Tax Committee, said the governor is on the right track to propose further tax reductions. He said the challenge will be how to pay for any of the tax reductions in a sluggish economy.

?I am hopeful in the next two years we can come out with a package that Mainers can accept,? he said. ?I am an optimist; I think we can find something that works by working across the aisle with both parties.?

Knight said that, as with the tax cut package that was passed during the current legislative session, there will have to be compromises and a realization that all the goals may not be achievable in a single legislative session.

?To really claim that I was successful as a governor is to leave this office having Maine?s taxes at 25th in the nation,? LePage said.

Innovation or PR?: The Lexus iPad Print Ad | Digiday

Digital media is premised on innovation. It is the lifeblood of agencies and can be a calling card for brands. But it is, also, often enough, an exercise in public relations. Many publications, Digiday included, are eager to be the ?first? to something or other. The result is many ?innovations? are really closer to PR stunts that are measured not on business results or even R&D but on ?earned media.? There are even times, shockingly, that these things are done by agencies in the hopes of winning awards.

The downside of that is what?s been termed ?bright, shiny object? syndrome, where an article on Mashable or Fast Company sends brand managers scrambling to ?get me one of those.? There?s a reason so many brands rushed into Second Life, after all. Aaron Shapiro, CEO of Huge, said during Advertising Week that many clients are so distracted by the New New Thing that they neglect the basics that can actually change their businesses.

With this in mind, Digiday is starting a series that will examine the relative merits of a new talked-about effort to determine which it is: genuine innovation or PR exercise. We?ll list the case for each and invite you to weigh in on the comments, on Twitter, on Facebook or through good old-fashioned email. Please also send along nominations for future installments of ?Innovation or PR??

This week we look at the Lexus print campaign with Sports Illustrated that lets users bring a print ad to life with their iPads.

Lexus and agency TeamOne have developed technology called CinePrint that has allowed what it bills a ?print-digital ad mash-up? in the new issue of Sports Illustrated. Here?s what happens: Readers of Sports Illustrated take the print ad and place it over their iPad screen when it?s showing the iPad edition of Sports Illustrated or a specific page of the Lexus website. The ad then ?comes to life? with sight, sound and motion by playing images that shine through the page. It makes it appear as though the Lexus in the print ad is spinning its wheels and actually driving.

The Innovation Case: Static media has to become more interactive. There?s no doubt a wow factor in the idea that a boring old magazine ad can come to life. This is, in some ways, a form of augmented reality, which was quite popular with creative agencies for a while.

The PR Case: Who in their right mind is going to read a magazine, then bring it over to their iPads to do this? There?s a reason AR never really caught on with consumers as much as advertisers. It?s too much work for too little payoff. The campaign?s slick overview video is perfect for blogs and publications. Mashable wrote about the effort this week and wondered if it is ?the future of print advertising.?

What?s your take?

DNP Evernote 25 for Windows Phone brings new layout with improved performance

While some app developers seem to forget about Windows Phone, Evernote definitely has not. The tiled version of the cloud-based note taking app received an update on Thursday that brings an arsenal of new features, including an updated tile layout for note lists, a redesigned login / registration screen and user help tips. Perhaps the most anticipated new additions here are an improved note editing settings that adds more space to jot things down and a much welcomed performance boost. If your memory isn't quite what it used to be and you're looking for a helpful tool to take notes while on the go, you can snag the latest version of Evernote from the Windows Phone Store now. Westwood to meet Rose in World Golf Final

(AP) ? Justin Rose beat Tiger Woods by a stroke Thursday to set up a title match with Lee Westwood in the World Golf Final.

The two Englishmen, who played on the victorious European Ryder Cup team, will meet Saturday, with the winner getting $1.5 million and the runner-up $1 million in the eight-player exhibition.

Rose, who holed a sand wedge shot for an eagle at the 14th, finished with a 2-under 69 while Woods was at 70.

Westwood shot a course-record 61 in the semifinals to beat 2011 Masters champion Charl Schwartzel of South Africa by six shots. Westwood had two eagles and eight birdies, including a 50-footer at the last on the Sultan Course at Antalya Club. His score would have been even better if not for a double bogey at the fourth hole.

"It was just one of those days I was on a roll. I am just pleased to be swinging the ball well because I've got no hangover from the Ryder Cup, and that's nice," Westwood said. "It seemed the hole just got bigger and bigger with each hole I played, and that hasn't happened for a while.

"It's also a very satisfying feeling to be playing in a tournament like this, and if Justin had not beaten Webb Simpson earlier today I would not have had the opportunity to go out and shoot 61. So a lot of things have to go your way and I have capitalized on a bit of fortune."

Rose tried to pull his cap over his face when his wedge shot at No. 14 took a couple of bounces and disappeared into the hole. Woods also broke out in a smile.

"I was really struggling early on today and to can that shot at 14 was easily the turning point," Rose said. "In proper match play you would only win the hole, but in this format I've picked up two shots on Tiger and it's help me win the match."

Rose then birdied No. 13, and after his eagle a hole later both birdied No. 16 before ending with two pars apiece.

"When Justin birdied 13 and holed out at 14, it was the turning point in the match," Woods said. "I was 2 up at the time and all of a sudden 1 down with four holes to play.

"But I haven't played since format since the Dunhill Cup in '98, so it's been awhile, and it's a neat format as it's never over until it's done. There can be some big-time swings out there, as we saw with Justin at 14. But then it was a long day and it's certainly frustrating when I've lost two matches by a shot, but that's the way it goes."

Rose is now ready for an all-English showdown with Westwood.

"I would dearly love to win this as I want to stay fresh and I want to stay hungry for the rest of the season," Rose said. "There is very little history of Westwood and myself playing against each other, but being the world No. 5 at the moment it would be great to get one over the world No. 4."

The final is Saturday morning, with Woods and the other players competing in an afternoon Pro-Am. Woods has hinted he will consider a return to Turkey next year for the inaugural $7 million Turkish Open that was announced this week.

Woods also backed Darren Clarke to become captain of the European team for the 2014 Ryder Cup in Gleneagles. Woods helped Clarke when the Northern Irishman's first wife, Heather, died weeks before the 2006 Ryder Cup in Ireland.

"I'm not sure what the process is, but if Darren is selected he would make a great captain," Woods said. "He's one of my best friends out here and he's a great guy. He'd make a great leader."

Amazon extending Kindle Owners' Lending Library to the UK, Germany and France this month

Amazon's Kindle Owners' Lending Library has grown considerably since launching in the US, and it looks like the company's finally decided it was time to let some other countries in on the service as well. It announced today that Amazon Prime members in the UK, Germany and France would all have access to the service "later this month," although it's not providing a specific date just yet. As in the US, it will let folks borrow up to one book a month for free, with over 200,000 titles available to choose from (including "thousands" in the countries' local languages). Alongside that expansion, Amazon has also announced yet another increase (of $100,000) to its Kindle Direct Publishing Select fund -- which pays independent authors who include their books in the Lending Library -- with an even bigger one planed for November. No word yet on any additional countries next in line.

Casino motion passes | Ottawa & Region | News | Ottawa Sun

Report an error

Odds are council?s 19-5 vote Wednesday in support of a new casino will set the table for a potentially painful debate on where the betting house might go.

?

After one of the more impassioned debates by council this term, politicians overwhelmingly agreed to signal the city?s interest in a casino to the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp.

Still, council members are flying blind as the OLG advances its tendering process outside of public scrutiny.

The OLG is looking for a private operator to build and run a new casino in the nation?s capital. Only one preferred proposal -- not a shortlist of locations -- will be sent to City Hall in 2013 for council?s mandatory approval.

Hanging in the balance is the future of the Rideau Carleton Raceway, which is planning what can be only described as a survival bid. If the raceway doesn?t win the casino tender, it faces closure since the OLG wants only one gaming facility in the Ottawa region.

The city receives a cut of the revenues if it hosts a gaming facility.

Councillors Mathieu Fleury (Rideau-Vanier), Scott Moffatt (Rideau-Goulbourn), David Chernushenko (Capital), Tim Tierney (Beacon Hill-Cyrville) and Diane Deans (Gloucester-Southgate) voted against the concept of a new casino.

Moffatt commanded the attention of his colleagues as he pointed out the OLG has no interest in casinos outside urban clusters. The gaming zones across Ontario have been drawn to rip out rural raceway slot operations in favour of city casinos, he said.

Deans scoffed at suggestions that the vote was simply to explore the idea of a casino in Ottawa.

?Don?t kid yourself. This vote matters,? Deans said.

There were other councillors who lodged complaints against the OLG?s tendering plan, but they endorsed a new casino anyway.

Bay Coun. Mark Taylor said the OLG is ?setting us up for an impossible choice? and he lambasted the agency?s ?poorly done? process.

City management confirmed to council staff have been approached by a couple of private interests poking around the casino issue, however staff are not pointing them to any potential locations.

Deans asked staff about sites being bandied about. They include Rideau Carleton Raceway, Scotiabank Place, Ottawa International Airport, downtown, Dows Lake and the Bayview area, where the O-Train meets the Transitway.

City manager Kent Kirkpatrick said he doesn?t know which sites the private sector might be eyeing.
