Emirates Environmental Group sets bar high in its 16th edition of ...

EEG encourages the various segments of the community, institutions, government and private entities to participate in this campaign and be part of this year's record breaking score by bringing their cans on the 28th of February to the designated sites.

The Campaign aims to gather the biggest possible number of aluminum cans for recycling by encouraging the support of the community and thus provide a boost to the local recycling industry and reduce the quantity of waste going to landfills.

This campaign is in line with the group's efforts to protect the environment by promoting awareness, community involvement and action programs.

Ms. Habiba Al Marashi, Chairperson of the Group, pointed out that every year, the UAE consumes more than 500 million cans of beverages and sends approximately 5% for recycling, compared with the global average of 63%.

She was happy to announce that EEG's participants in waste management programs collected more than 106 tons of waste during the month of January.

348 participants were able to collect 93,975 kg of paper, 40 participants collected 208 kg of aluminum cans, 54 participants collected 34,348 kg of glass, 163 participants collected 6939 kg of plastic, and 13 participants managed to collect 423 kg of beverage container "Tetrapak". 26 participants in toner campaign collected 487 packages, and 10 participants in battery campaign collected 449 kilograms of batteries.

She stressed on the need to mobilize more support from various sectors of society to instill the habit and culture of recycling amongst the population.

She indicates that change has already begun with EEG's successful programs that provide students, residents, public and private sectors with a platform to highlight their environmental effort and engage families, residential areas and hotels to collect cans for recycling.

She adds that all this brings a sense of awareness in the extended community about the detriments of throwing aluminum cans.

The group aims to continue to contribute to the efforts of protecting the environment of the UAE through the development of a number of educational and environmental programs, including training and social activities and welcomes the support of the community. Membership is opened to all and the group receives encouragement and support from a number of local and federal governmental bodies concerned with the environment.
