DAVOS (Reuters) - The world's largest trading house Glencore is fast turning itself into a Russian oil trade leader from an outsider by mending fences in just one year with Rosneft, the Kremlin's national energy champion.
Through a $10 billion oil funding deal with state-controlled Rosneft, the Swiss-based firm that has been big in Russian coal, grains and aluminum for two decades is extending this grip to a sector where it played second fiddle to companies such as rival trader Vitol or Royal Dutch Shell.
"It shouldn't come as a surprise because Russia is one of the world's largest commodity producers and Glencore is the world's largest commodities trader," a high level source close to the situation said.
However, the speed of Glencore's expansion in Russian oil exports has been extraordinary.
Just a few years ago, Glencore's biggest investment in Russian oil, through minority stakes in mid-sized firm Russneft, seemed at risk of expropriation while its attempts to cooperate with Rosneft had long been unsuccessful.
Glencore was the only major trader or oil company not allowed to participate in Rosneft's huge oil export tenders, unlike arch-rival Vitol and oil majors Shell and BP.
Russian industry sources said the failure was partly due to tensions between Rosneft Chairman Igor Sechin, a close ally of President Vladimir Putin, and tycoon Oleg Deripaska, who has links to Glencore through the aluminium trade.
Deripaska controls aluminium giant Rusal, in which Glencore has a minority stake.
All this changed when Sechin left the government in May to take over as chief executive of Rosneft, a job requiring deep involvement in operations, unlike his previous role as chairman.
Sechin began a new drive towards consolidation of Russia's oil industry by steering a $55 billion acquisition of rival TNK-BP from oil major BP and a group of Soviet-born billionaires.
At that point money became paramount.
"Rosneft was looking to finance the deal and Glencore has good relations with a large number of banks. The company was prepared to step up to the plate and quickly arrange pre-financing for Rosneft," the high-level source said.
Both Glencore and Rosneft declined any official comment.
RIVALS IN TANDEM
Rosneft said in December Glencore and Vitol would raise $10 billion on its behalf from banks and take 67 million tonnes of Rosneft's oil exports for the next five years in return.
The arrangement will allow Rosneft to lighten the burden on its balance sheet as the money would be borrowed by the traders. The traders win the right to market 280,000 barrels per day (bpd) of Rosneft's exports.
These volumes will amount to around a tenth of seaborne exports from Russia, the world's largest oil producer.
The loan is unusual as Glencore and Vitol will borrow together, effectively working in tandem for the first time.
Industry and banking sources said this was done to avoid confusing the banks.
The split will be far from equal, however, as Glencore will line up much more backing from banks than that mustered by Vitol, which is co-owned by British businessman Ian Taylor, who built the firm into the world's largest oil trader.
Sources told Reuters that Glencore, co-owned by South African Ivan Glasenberg, will market 70 percent of the volumes under the Rosneft deal while Vitol will get 30 percent.
That marks a change from previous years when Vitol, alongside Shell and oil trader Gunvor, dominated the landscape.
"A year ago it would all have seemed impossible. But having seen Glencore's rise over the past year, I'm now pretty confident they will be around and play big for many years," said a trader with a rival.
The Rosneft deal alone would represent just under a tenth of Glencore's global oil portfolio of 2.5 million bpd.
RUSSIAN OIL APPEAL TO RISE
The rise in Russian oil trading has confirmed Glencore as one of the industry's most resilient and combative companies.
Five years ago its fortunes in Russia looked shaky after its investment in Russneft was jeopardized when the oil company's founder Mikhail Gutseriyev fell out with the Kremlin.
Gutseriyev ultimately returned from exile but Glencore is still owed more than $1 billion by Russneft - a sum it will not recoup before 2017 under a restructuring deal.
Far from being deterred, Glencore sought a bigger role in Russia.
The turning point came in early 2012 when Russia opened the new Baltic export port of Ust-Luga near St Petersburg after multiple delays which made many other traders reluctant to rely on crude from the terminal.
Glencore committed to large volumes from Ust-Luga, including oil from Rosneft, despite the risk of delays.
"Since then they never looked back and only kept increasing volumes," a Rosneft source said.
At one point in October last year Glencore was marketing more than 20 percent of the volumes that Russia exported from its Baltic ports, its biggest export route.
Traders at rivals say they do not understand how Glencore makes money on those exports as it pays premiums to Rosneft of as much as 70 cents per barrel, thought too much to recoup.
Glencore declined to comment on its trading strategy but it is clear the company is as bullish as ever on Russian oil.
Its boss Glasenberg said recently that Russia's government was likely to incentivize production in more inaccessible regions.
"As production from less accessible areas increases, so too will Russian oil's attractiveness as an investment proposition," he said.

R.A. Dickey said the pictures and literature couldn't have prepared him for the young boy who approached him last week on one of the squalid streets of Mumbai's red-light district.
The boy was maybe 3 years old, 4 at best. He had no pants on. His body was covered with open sores.
"He was playing amongst the open sewage and filth with rats as big as dogs. Unsupervised," the Toronto Blue Jays' new knuckleballer told The Canadian Press on a conference call Tuesday from India's most populous city. "You see these images and pictures that just don't seem like they should exist. And you hope that it's the only one ... but that's what's representative, these lives that just don't have a voice."
The 38-year-old is in Mumbai to work with Bombay Teen Challenge, a Christian organization that has rescued women and children from sex trafficking for the past 23 years.
It's a cause that Dickey says speaks to his own narrative. He wrote about being sexually abused as a child in his autobiography "Wherever I Wind Up: My Quest for Truth, Authenticity and the Perfect Knuckleball."
"It's authentic to me because of my past experience, also I have a sentimentality to it because the girls that I've seen firsthand in the streets, these 19-, 20-, 21-year-old girls. You have to look beyond that and see at one point they were daughters themselves, and having two daughters ... that just for me was so compelling."
He made the trip with his daughters, 11-year-old Gabriel and 9-year-old Lila.
"I want to give my children a heart for humanity," Dickey said. "The only way to really do that is to get them outside of the bubble that they live in, and expose them in very measured ways to what real life is to a lot of people. They've responded beautifully."
The 2012 NL Cy Young winner said it's been "a roller-coaster" visit, from the visceral red-light images of women in doorways and the cages where they keep them when they're first trafficked.
But he also saw hope.
Dickey and his daughters stayed at Ashagram, a rehabilitation campus outside Mumbai that's home to 300 women and children. They were the "most hopeful days" of the trip. They played cricket and sang songs with the children, many of whom are HIV positive.
"Those are the miracles, the 300 lives in Ashagram, those are 300 living miracles," Dickey said. "Sure (my daughters) heard about the wickedness and the darkness, but they got to actually see the redemption, so their response has been really positive. This is a seminal trip for them."
Dickey, who speaks openly with his daughters about his own sexual abuse, helped celebrate the opening of a clinic in the midst of Mumbai's red-light district. He helped pay for the clinic, raising over $100,000 by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro last winter.
"The facility is like a beacon of light in the middle of a swamp," he said.
BTC's Thomason Varghese said the organization was blessed by Dickey's presence.
"But we think we've been even more blessed by his daughters," Varghese said. "Just to see innocent girls loving our girls and playing with them with no inhibitions, it's just been a real joy for us to see and experience. There are friendships that have come through this despite how different their backgrounds are.
"Today the girls were in our feeding truck serving food to those who are coming from the street, just watching that was a sight to see."
While estimates of sex trafficking in India vary, most studies put the number at more than a million children involved in the country's sex trade.
Dickey was asked how can one measure success in the face of such grim statistics.
"If the organization rescues one human life from that hell, then it's done its job in some way," Dickey said. "You're talking over the last 23 years over 1,000 lives being rescued, given a second chance to have a life, rescuing children, people who were left for dead on doorsteps of these brothels. . .
"The women who had been trafficked into prostitution, dying in hospitals with their children by their bed, here's the Bombay Teen Challenge with a relationship in place to be able to take in and care for these children.
"How do you measure success? I think it's one life at a time."

"Mutinous" is not a word frequently used to describe teams of NASA scientists and engineers.
But that's precisely the term employed by Harvard University sleep scientist Charles Czeisler to explain what happened when the group operating the Pathfinder mission's rover in 1997 was required to live indefinitely on Mars time.
"They didn't really have a plan for dealing with the Martian day before they went up, and the rover lasted a lot longer than it was supposed to, so they actually had a mutiny and wanted to shut the thing off because they were so exhausted," he says, drily adding the obvious: "NASA wasn't too happy with that notion."
The Mars day, called a sol, is 39 minutes and 35 seconds longer than an Earth day. Every time NASA lands a robot on the Red Planet, its operations team must adapt to that long Martian day for the first period of roving, to take full advantage of the hours between the data transmission at the end of the rover's day and the upload of new commands the following Mars morning.
Staying up for 40 minutes extra each day, as Harvard sleep scientist Laura Barger points out, doesn't sound like much. "When you first think about it, it even sounds like a good thing, having a little extra time," she says. But not for long: The team's work schedule floats through two time zones every three days, while its actual location merrily persists in its normal light-dark habits. The team creeps from day shifts to night shifts and back.
Living for long on this perpetual Mars lag has proved extraordinarily unpopular. Joy Crisp, now a principal scientist at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, recalls the Pathfinder mission, which initially was expected to last seven days but ultimately endured 85. Nobody had planned for it. "I just remember getting to day 30 and thinking, 'I can't keep this up,'" Crisp says. Neither could anyone else, and the disgruntled staff forced NASA leadership to drastically change the schedule.
The agency was more prepared for the Spirit and Opportunity rover missions in 2004 and asked Czeisler to chair an advisory panel about how to handle the Mars time adjustment. But such guidance lost its utility when the two rovers landed within three weeks of each other on opposite ends of Mars?the equivalent of Denver and New Delhi?resulting in hordes of enthusiastic but exhausted workers bouncing between three time zones on two planets.
NASA leaders claim they have become more sensitive to the issue over the years. Andrew Mishkin, who helped plan the Curiosity mission, says that for the first time NASA officials decided to put a definitive three-month cap on Mars time. They also scheduled people to work no more than four days in a row, encouraged employees to monitor their own and their colleagues' fatigue levels, and had Human Resources prowl the lab for zombied workers to send home. "But everybody was pretty tired of it by November," when the 90th sol finally set, Mishkin says. And when NASA officials wanted to extend the Mars schedule past the 90th sol because the rover was running behind schedule, they put it up to a democratic vote: The answer was a resounding "No."
Research indicates there is more NASA could do for these tired people. Barger led an experiment using volunteers from the Phoenix lander operations crew in 2008, providing them with education about circadian rhythms, specific sleep-wake and caffeine schedules to adhere to, and countermeasures such as blue-light boxes to place on their desks. The 19 volunteers were monitored with medical tests, and their progress was tracked with wristwatch-size detectors. The experiment was limited by a small sample size and no control group, but 87 percent of participants reported they were able to adjust to the sol.
One might imagine that NASA would have leapt on research like this and provided the same countermeasures for its Curiosity mission, but it did not. Harvard sleep scientist Steven Lockley says NASA simply doesn't take human factors as seriously as it should, adopting our culture's flippant "I'll sleep when I'm dead" attitude about getting rest. To make matters worse, NASA's ranks are filled, he says, with "highly motivated A types who think they can overcome anything?but that's not true, because biology is there for everyone."

A fast thinking 9-year-old Illinois girl was able to help guide her mother to safety after the woman suffered a diabetic attack while driving at speeds of up to 70 mph.
Jennifer Sheridan, 42, was driving her daughter Aleksandra to McDonald's in Frankfort, Ill., after the two had attended a high school basketball game on the evening of Jan. 18. Sheridan, who has type 2 diabetes, had a diabetic attack when her blood sugar suddenly dropped. She told ABCNews.com that she was not aware of what was happening.
"I was still conscious, and talking, my daughter said. I don't remember any of that," Sheridan said. "We went through, she says, a red light, and then I know I kept saying, 'We have to stop.' That was in my mind, but it wasn't clicking."
Sheridan said that they passed her house and the McDonald's. Aleksandra was screaming and crying during the wayward drive, which she says must have lasted 15 to 20 minutes, but kept talking to her mother.
"She says she kept telling me different things, that I was going too fast, or too slow," Sheridan said.
While the car was still moving, Sheridan's husband called. She said that Aleksandra was on phone screaming that they were going off the road.
Her car eventually veered to the right, through a small ditch and a group of trees. At that point Aleksandra turned the car off, preventing the still moving car from hitting a tree.
Luckily, both mother and daughter were unharmed. Once the car was off, Aleksandra slowly fed her mother a chocolate bar that was in the car's cup holder.
"Once we were stopped and she could focus, she fed me," Sheridan said. "She said, 'I kept just giving little pieces so you wouldn't choke.'"
Police and the fire department were called to the scene by a passerby who saw the incident. The story also caught local media attention from WBBM-TV and Fox News.
Sheridan says the next thing she actually remembers was being in the ambulance. Police who arrived on the scene congratulated Aleksandra, and even gave her a yellow duck toy, which they call the "Golden Duck Award for Heroes."
This is not the first time Aleksandra has come to her mom's aid when she had a diabetic attack. Two years ago, while they were in their home, the girl called 911 when she found her mother on the kitchen floor.
Sheridan said that she is now using an insulin pump, which is designed to eliminate lows in blood sugar in diabetics. She said that she will soon be on the list for a new pancreas. With a daughter and a 16-year-old son with cerebral palsy, she says she needs to be in top form. For now, she's happy that both she and Aleksandra are unscathed.
"Every day, I wake up and think, 'Yes!'" she said.

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Research has suggested that compounds that give colorful fruits their rich hues, especially berries, promote health and might even prevent cancer. But for the first time, scientists have exposed extracts from numerous berries high in those pigments to human saliva to see just what kinds of health-promoting substances are likely to survive and be produced in the mouth.
It's too early to name the best berry for health promotion based on this initial work. But the researchers have discovered that two families of pigments that provide berries with their colors, called anthocyanins, are more susceptible to degradation in the mouth than are the other four classes of these pigments.
The Ohio State University study also showed that bacteria living in the mouth are responsible for most of the breakdown of these compounds that occurs in saliva. Researchers are investigating whether it's the berry pigments themselves, or instead the products of their degradation, that actually promote health.
Scientists say that these early findings will contribute to the further development of confectionaries, gums and other delivery devices for the prevention and possibly the treatment of conditions such as periodontal disease and oral cancers.
The researchers exposed extracts of anthocyanin pigments from blueberries, chokeberries, black raspberries, red grapes and strawberries to the saliva collected from 14 people. Black raspberries, in particular, have been shown in numerous previous studies to have chemopreventive effects on tumors in the mouth, esophagus and colon, mostly in animal studies. Their high anthocyanin content has been linked to those benefits.
"All fruits are unique because their chemical composition, or fingerprint, varies," said Mark Failla, professor of human nutrition at Ohio State and interim chair of the Department of Human Sciences. "There are many different edible berries. Some might be better for providing health-promoting effects within the oral cavity, whereas others may be more beneficial for colonic health. We simply do not know at this time.
"Increased intake of fruits and vegetables is associated with decreased risk of some chronic diseases. An understanding of the metabolism of these compounds, and the relative activities of the compounds in the consumed fruit and their metabolic products, is needed to make scientifically sound dietary recommendations and to develop effective delivery vehicles for the mouth," Failla said.
The research is published in a recent issue of the journal Food Chemistry.
Failla and colleagues asked 14 healthy individuals between the ages of 21 and 55 years to collect saliva in the morning before they had eaten breakfast or brushed their teeth. Research participants later collected additional saliva samples before and after they had rinsed their mouths with an antibacterial liquid.
The five fruits selected for study allowed the scientists to test the six distinct families of the anthocyanin pigments. Researchers purified the anthocyanins from each berry type and added the extracts to saliva.
The extent of the pigment degradation in saliva was primarily a function of the chemical structure of a given anthocyanin, said Failla, also an investigator in Ohio State's Comprehensive Cancer Center and Food Innovation Center.
Two families of anthocyanins consistently degraded when exposed to saliva: delphinidin and petunidin. Four other families were more stable: cyanidin, pelargonidin, peonidin and malvidin.
"Our observations suggest that the bacteria within one's oral cavity are a primary mediator of pigment metabolism. The bacteria are converting compounds that are present in the foods into metabolites," Failla said. "One area of great interest is whether the health-promoting benefits associated with eating anthocyanin-rich fruits like berries are provided by the pigment itself, the natural combinations of the pigments in the fruit, or the metabolites produced by bacteria in the mouth and other regions of the gastrointestinal tract."
There is context for this study that further complicates the understanding of anthocyanins' benefits. Multiple studies have led to the conclusion that anthocyanins themselves are very poorly absorbed by the body.
"If anthocyanins are the actual health-promoting compound, you would want to design food products, confectionaries and gels containing mixtures of anthocyanins that are stable in the mouth. If, on the other hand, the metabolites produced by the metabolism of anthocyanins are the actual health-promoting compounds, there will be greater interest in fruits that contain anthocyanins that are less stable in the oral cavity," Failla said. "We lack such insights at this time."
The extent to which the anthocyanins were degraded varied among the 14 people whose saliva was used in the study. However, two families of anthocyanins consistently degraded the most in all volunteers. Failla said the observed variation among individuals is likely related to differences in the microbial community that resides in each person's mouth.
This research group is continuing the work, examining which bacteria are most involved in the metabolism of anthocyanins and testing the stability of the pigments in berry juices in the mouths of human volunteers rather than in test tubes containing their saliva.

I mean really, isn?t it nice to not have to always cook every night?
Isn?t having a night off from time to time such a great feeling?
I love cooking but even I need a night ?off? once or twice a week. In case you were wondering, I don?t consider making a salad cooking, or chopping up vegetables to eat on toasted bread as cooking either, nor is heating up leftovers (one of my favorite cooking experiences). To me that?s just getting ready to eat.
With squash being plentiful and very inexpensive it makes a great side dish with dinner tonight and a fabulous salad or soup tomorrow. I recommend making quinoa and roasted squash as a side dish one night, then using the leftovers, you can make this salad for a fabulous lunch or even a delightful dinner salad that won?t taste like you?re eating last nights leftovers.
That?s always a good thing.
Roasted Cumin Spiced Squash
2 lbs. of cubed butternut squash
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon sweet paprika
salt
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Peel and remove the seeds from the squash. Cube the squash into bite sized pieces and put in a large bowl. Toss the squash with the oil, cumin and paprika. Place the squash on a cookie sheet and sprinkle with salt. Roast for 35-45 minutes or until squash is tender.
Roasted Squash and Quinoa Salad
2 cups roasted squash
2 cups cooked quinoa
2 cups baby kale and baby chard (or greens of choice)
1/2 cup dried cranberries ( or raisins)
1/2 crushed pistachios (or nuts of choice)
crumbled feta to garnish (optional)
Cumin Dressing (below) or dressing of choice
In a large bowl, add the cooked squash. Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste. Add the quinoa, greens, cranberries and pistachios. Toss the salad with the dressing and serve immediately.
Note: This salad will hold up nicely to the dressing, minus the greens. You can always add the salad greens at a later time if you?d like to add the dressing now and allow the flavors to marry. Also a good idea if you?re bringing this to someone house for dinner.
Cumin Dressing
2 tablespoons lemon juice
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 tablespoon honey (vegans use agave or sweetener of choice)
In a small frying pan over high heat, add the cumin seeds and toast until fragrant, about 1 minute. Remove from heat. Using a mortar and pestle, grind the cumin seeds. Combine the lemon juice, oil, cumin and honey. Whisk until well combined.
Note: If the salad won?t be eaten all at once, add the dressing to each serving individually to preserve the freshness of the greens.

(CEO Jesper Jensen told me that users create in-game profiles and log in through Facebook, so while it?s possible that there are a few ?repeats,? for the most part these are unique users.)
The company?s offerings include integration with payments systems, multiplayer support, in-game chat, data management, and player matchmaking. It?s supposed to work on console, browser-based, PC/Mac, and mobile games. Jensen said the company focuses on ?the convergence of content from these sectors ? mobile, social and casual.?
PlayerScale is now being implemented across 4,000 games from more than 2,600 game developers, including SGN (Social Gaming Network, which has put a big emphasis on cross-platform development), Con Artist Games and 505 Games. One of the big goals, Jensen said, is to allow developers to focus on the creative aspects of game development, rather than the backend infrastructure.
The company was founded in 2011. It is self-funded and cash-flow positive.

Thanks goodness mom placed an order with Discount School Supplies before this cold snap hit because we've been inside A LOT. We needed just a few things to supplement our art supplies and make some projects we've been planning since our visit to the Children's Museum of the Arts in NYC. On our HOURS LONG visit there a few weeks ago, we spied some really neat 3D art made with paint and what appeared to be toilet paper rolls and other concentric cardboard pieces. We thought we'd try something similar with wood and paint. And glue. The glue turned out to be key -- we don't ever really use it much at home and, when we do, it's usually a glue stick. But both Cam and I liked using the glue with a brush offered at the museum.
To begin, mom gave us real stretched canvas to paint with our new IKEA MALA paints (IKEA recently revamped their art supplies and, while they kept our favorites, they also made some new great additions). ?Unlike our beloved Biocolor paints, the IKEA paints mix together and so mom was curious to see if we'd both end up with brown canvases. We didn't!

The mean number of firearms-related assaults in Seattle also increased, as did the mean number of robberies with guns. Even the mean number of accidental shooting deaths more than doubled, according to data in a government journal.
The city has collected donations totaling nearly $120,000 to pay for a series of gun?buyback events.
People will receive up to $100 gift cards for hand guns, shotguns and rifles, and up to $200 for assault weapons. Full gift card value will only be given for working weapons.

In assessing its programs, FSA evaluated the needs of smaller farm operations and any unintended barriers to obtaining financing. For beginning farmers and ranchers, for instance, the new microloan program offers a simplified loan application process. In addition, for those who want to grow niche crops to sell directly to ethnic markets and farmers markets, the microloan program offers a path to obtain financing. For past FSA Rural Youth Loan recipients, the microloan program provides a bridge to successfully transition to larger-scale operations.
Since 2009, USDA has made a record amount of farm loans through FSA?more than 128,000 loans totaling nearly $18 billion. USDA has increased the number of loans to beginning farmers and ranchers from 11,000 loans in 2008 to 15,000 loans in 2011. More than 40 percent of USDA?s farm loans now go to beginning farmers. In addition, USDA has increased its lending to socially-disadvantaged producers by nearly 50 percent since 2008.
Producers can apply for a maximum of $35,000 to pay for initial start-up expenses such as hoop houses to extend the growing season, essential tools, irrigation, delivery vehicles, and annual expenses such as seed, fertilizer, utilities, land rents, marketing, and distribution expenses.
